There are three possible types of sliding gates depending on your entrance levels and space. The first type is the standard sliding gate which slides along a track in the ground. This best is suited for level ground, for keeping small animals in, and where there is large amount of space to slide the gate back. The second type of sliding gate is a cantilever, this is where there is no track in the ground and the gate is self-supporting on two sets of carriage wheels and are ideal to be used where the ground is sloping across the entrance. The third type is a telescopic gate, where gate is in two sections and when moving one section travels at twice the speed of the other, allowing the gate to slide back into a smaller space. Whereas with a traditional sliding gate you need a little over the width of the entrance for the gate to slide back to, with a telescopic gate only half the width of the entrance is needed.
